The Monkey Tail Cactus belongs to the Cactaceae family, a group of perennial succulent plants native mostly to North and South America. It is also considered a lithophyte, as it has shallow roots and naturally grows among rocks and in crevices, absorbing moisture from the air.
Its name comes from the plant’s long, trailing stems covered in soft white spines that resemble a monkey’s tail. The light green stems are flexible and textured, giving them a distinct, almost animal-like appearance. Monkey Tail Cactus is easy to care for and well-suited for beginners.
This plant grows best in bright, indirect sunlight but can tolerate some direct sun during the day. During the spring and summer growing season, it should be watered about once a week. In fall and winter, when the plant goes dormant, water only when the soil is completely dry. Avoid overwatering, as it may cause root rot.
It prefers well-draining soil, such as a cactus-specific mix or regular potting soil blended with perlite or pumice for better drainage. The plant has a shallow root system and does not require a deep pot. When the stems begin to hang over the edge of the pot, consider moving it to a hanging basket to allow the stems to trail naturally.
The Monkey Tail Cactus thrives in warm environments with temperatures above 60°F but can tolerate occasional drops as low as 20°F. It does not require added humidity and is well-adapted to dry indoor conditions.
With its unique appearance and minimal maintenance needs, the Monkey Tail Cactus makes a striking and low-maintenance addition to any plant collection.
